Open Practice

The open practice session is designed to introduce you to the sport of biathlon, or give you some practice time if you’ve tried it previously.  A range officer will assign you an open lane and rifle shortly after arrival at the biathlon range.  We will have range Safety Officers and helpers at the range sharing rifle, range safety, and shooting basics.  Rifle and ammo will be provided.  Participants must ski or snowshoe to the biathlon range (approximately 3/4 mile from the parking lot).
Cost is $30.00

Fee Summary

Because it is a low snow year it is possible the race will be canceled.  No refunds will be issued for any reason including event cancellation.  We treat this event as a fundraiser, so in the event of cancelation, we can issue a receipt for a charitable contribution if requested.

  • Practice session (optional) $30
  • Race $30
  • JMR Trail pass $13
  • USBA one-day membership  $20 (link to USBA is in the registration section above)

Biathlon Sprint Race

The race is 4-5km in length and consists of two ski loops and two shooting bouts.  At each bout, the racer will shoot 5 shots at knock-down targets with the shooting posture and target size depending on the class of entry (see race classes below for more details).  For every missed target, regardless of race classification, the skier must ski a short penalty loop before returning to the race course – the clock runs the entire time – the skier with the shortest elapsed time in each class wins.

Racers will start in 30-second intervals and the course will be marked at all intersections (course map available at registration).  Ammo and range rifles are provided for those racing Rec classes (rifles left at range – not carried).  Comp class racers must have their own rifle and ammunition and must carry the same.
Cost is $30.00

There will be three race classes:

  1. Rec Youth: 10-14 years old – shooting prone on standing (large) targets with bench rest and using pre-positioned range guns for both shooting bouts (no “racking” or passing of guns to incoming skiers or placing different guns into shooting positions during the race – racers must use the pre-positioned gun at the point/lane they ski in to)
  2. Rec Adult: 15 years and older – shooting prone on standing targets with bench rest and using range guns for both shooting bouts (no “racking” or passing of guns to incoming skiers or placing different guns into shooting positions during the race – racers must use the pre-positioned gun at the point/lane they ski in to)
  3. Comp: 15 years and older – shooting prone on prone (small) and standing on stand (large) targets using carried, regulation biathlon rifle (no bench rests, no non-biathlon guns allowed)

There will be no Devo class this year.

The BBB was originally conceived as a “Rec – level” race for biathlon enthusiasts who did not have their own rifle.  As the Idaho “Comp-level” biathlon community has grown in the last few years, we have attempted to accommodate those athletes who have their own rifle by adding the Comp class to the event.  Because our range is small we cannot at the moment accommodate all combinations of age groups (youth, junior, senior, masters) and skill levels (Rec, Devo, Comp).  Each year we try to evaluate the likely attendees from the region’s biathlon community and offer race classes that will fit with the majority of attendees.  In light of that, we ask registrants to pick from the offered race classes that most closely matches their age, skill level, and equipment.

Bib Pickup and Trail Pass

All participants in both the practice session and the race must check in at the Jug Mountain Ranch (JMR) clubhouse prior to practice or race to pick up the bib and sign a liability waiver.  All participants must also have a season trail pass or a $13 day pass purchased in the clubhouse Pro Shop on the day of the race.

Awards

First place awarded for male and female in each class, so, 6 first place awards!

Soup and beverages are available in the stadium after the race.

Fundraising

This is the McCall Biathlon Team’s main fundraising event!

Funds collected allow us to maintain and grow the youth and masters biathlon programs.  Funds are also used to purchase ammunition, repair targets, and rifles, and improve range facilities.
